Why an ‘implantable chamber’?

The treatment of children in paediatric oncology involves the administration of massive quantities of drugs (chemotherapy), and sometimes repeated blood sampling. One of the major challenges in this area is the placement of venous catheters. The current standard is to install a central venous access, partially or fully implantable, and sometimes tunnelled. Unfortunately, patients in countries with limited resources do not yet benefit from this type of equipment. Some children do not receive their chemotherapy treatment because of the lack of satisfactory venous access.
The introduction of implantable chambers for children suffering from cancer in Yaoundé would provide a concrete response to a specific problem.
